We’re fortunate enough to have some of the most brilliant minds and SEO practitioners writing for us here at Search Engine Land, and as I’ve run through the data on our most read stories, I’ve been consistently reminded just how amazing our talent pool is in this industry. The quality of our contributors’ advice, their keen insights and depth of experiences are so well respected across the industry and across the globe, that they deserve another look as we close out the year, and look forward to an even more productive 2011.

Look for more stories and features by these authors and new contributors alike in the coming year, as we’re refocusing our efforts on driving even higher quality content for the search industry.

Methodology note: I’d previously set an arbitrary minimum of 1,000 pageviews to make these ‘best of lists’, but in 100% Organic, arguably one of our most popular columns overall, our writers consistently blew that away, so I decided just to take the Top 20 from the year to date. If you have the time, I highly recommend going back through the archives for more great stories like these.

Your precious words. You know they’ve got to be right to attract the audience you want.

You’ve slaved over them, carefully crafting each phrase. You finally hit “publish,” and what happens?

Nobody reads them.

No comments, no tweets, no sharing on Facebook.

It’s enough to send a writer into deep depression, and wipe out motivation to keep producing great content.

Think you need to spend another 10,000 hours perfecting your writing skills? Probably not.

Actually, the solution may be a lot easier than you expect. Writing less and styling your text so it’s easy to read could be all you need to do to attract and hold attention.

One of the most engaging features of the blogging platform is the commenting system.

Many bloggers believe there is as much or even more value in the discussion than the posts they write themselves. Comments are a classic form of social proof for blogs, and blogs that attract lots of comments appear more authoritative.

Because of all this, comments can become addictive, and many bloggers want to know how to get more of them. While there is a lot of great anecdotal advice out there from experienced bloggers, I thought some might appreciate a more data-driven approach.

Fortunately for you, I’ve spent the past few months analyzing data on more than 150,000 blog posts. And in doing that, I’ve identified four data points you can use to encourage more commenting on your site.

There’s been plenty of buzz, following Matt & Toni’s talk at Le Web, about how Automattic are planning on leveraging the vast ‘Facebook-sized’ world of WordPress.org installs.

From the video, this would seem to integrating a ‘kind of’ app store into WordPress.org installs alongside eliminating the difference in functionality between .org and .com sites by effective third party integration of .com features into .org sites.

While WeblogToolsCollection.com focuses on all things WordPress, it’s healthy to get out of the house every once in awhile to see what else is going on in the world. In this instance, the world is Open-Source Content Management Systems. Water and Stone which is a digital agency has released their annual open source CMS market share survey for 2010. This survey was comprised of 5,000 participants with more than 2,800 completing the full questionnaire. The report contains a look at various metrics and trends for 20 different content management systems. While the results of the survey are not definitive, there are some interesting trends specifically with WordPress that I wanted to share.

Water and Stone used Amazon.com to determine who has the largest number of books in print, which systems have been the subject of publishing activity in the last 12 months, and which systems are currently the subject of books yet to be printed. While I knew WordPress had a big year in terms of books available, I had no idea how many books there were.

Book Publishers Love WordPress

The other thing I found interesting in this report is their metric of search engine ranking. Water and Stone used the following keywords in Google, Yahoo! and Bing to see which systems made it in the top 30 results: content management system, open source content management systems, open source cms, cms, web cms, web content management system.

WordPress/Automattic to unify “the dark matter of the web”.

The top referrers for a lot of big sites are Facebook, Twitter, everything like that, but if you look at that there’s an ‘Other’ that often has 4x, 5x what Facebook will send in a day, in terms of traffic… You have something that’s Facebook-sized out there, but it’s spread across millions and millions of domains so it’s difficult to think about and difficult to talk about. But it’s sort of this dark matter of the web, that has a huge gravitational force. And what we want to figure out is how to unifiy that…

With the large influence that WordPress.org and WordPress.com have over the internet, Automattic may have the best chance at unifying that part of the web. Schneider said that 30 million publishers are using WordPress today, or about 10% of all websites in the world today. Approximately half of those WordPress sites are running on WordPress.com, and the other half are running the software themselves.

The 4 Charities That Championed Social Media This Year

This one might surprise you, given its starchy rep:

The Salvation Army is one of the most social-media savvy nonprofits, with an established presence on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr. The organization recruits virtual bell-ringers via Facebook and Twitter for their online red kettle program, and volunteers have to option to create a widget for their blog or connect through a Facebook app. This year, they’ve also offered a free app that lets users manage their virtual red kettle accounts from their iPhone.

The Salvation Army Facebook Page features a customized application for the Angel Giving Tree, a program presented by JCPenney that provides clothes and gifts for children and senior citizens. This year, Facebook users can participate, share their stores, and invite others to become fans of the cause on their Facebook page. And in Tulsa, the Salvation Army partnered with Social Media Tulsa to launch Tweet4Toys, a toy drive for needy children that banks on Twitter for its primary means of promotion. Participants are encouraged to use the #Tweet4Toys hashtag and to share photos, for example, a picture of a toy they’ve dropped off. The accompanying website includes a live counter that tracks Twitter mentions, and displays the profile photos of people who’ve used the hashtag to support the cause.
