But are they going to SM sites in the evening with work or play on their minds?

Companies almost invariably fire out their Facebook status updates during the workday. However, research from ExactTarget and CoTweet found that 65% of Facebook users do not log-in during the workday, but rather at night and on weekends. So what does this mean for marketers ? It means that you had better develop a media schedule around your posts that revolves around customers not you.

Like it or not brands are media today. This is especially true on social media sites like Facebook. It’s easy to develop a Facebook page that looks nice, the hard part is both developing engaging content to get the discussion going and keeping content fresh to ensure people come back to your page. Just because someone likes your page does not mean that they are getting your updates or coming back on a regular basis. You need to find what peaks their interests and how to get them hooked on becoming part of the community.

So which social network do you think came out tops in a rating of most-mentioned websites and social media services? You may guess Twitter or Facebook but in fact the top place on the list for 2010 goes to YouTube in the Zeta 2010 Buzz Awards which looks at the popularity of 125 social media sites.

The rankings depend on the volume of mentions and also the amount of positive mentions of websites to decide places on the awards list and according to Emily Banks over on Mashable, some of the first social networking sites have lost out in popularity this year to video and photo-sharing sites such as YouTube and Flickr. Positive mentions of YouTube and Flickr were a staggering 91% and 98% respectively and those sites came first and second in the awards.

The Best 11 Predictions for B2B Social Media in 2011

A printed circuit board inside a mobile phone
Image via Wikipedia

1. Mobile, Mobile, Mobile
With 4.6 billion cell phones in use around the world, this prediction is not too hard to make. The mobile experience will become even more importance with the continued growth of smartphones. As people continue to engage on social networks on their mobile phones, companies will need mobile versions of their web sites that are easily shareable with those networks. Company sites must formatted for multiple devices and provide mobile relevant content. Offer customers product reviews, dealer locations and other information that can be useful while on the go.

2. Open APIs Support Information Portability
Information will become more portable and the importance of open APIs will become clear to many B2B companies. Just like Twitter’s early success was based on opening their datastream to developers for their own use, more and more internal applications will offer the ability to pull information together for a clearer picture of the organization. Siloed information is not the future.

3. Collect, Analyze and Visualize Data
Once APIs are in place (see above), companies will start doing a better job collecting and analyzing data from their social platforms. It will no longer be okay to present long spreadsheets of data or bullet-pointed presentations. These numbers-based approaches exist to justify social media, and that type of reporting has passed. Look for data to be presented in more visual manners, even beyond charts and graphs, but in word clouds, visualizations and infographics. These more compelling reports are easier for all levels of an organization to understand and absorb.

Treat social media like exercise and win!

David Meerman Scott

I enjoy 45 minutes on an elliptical trainer every morning that I'm home. Sometimes the hotel I'm staying at has a machine and I jump on that too. Been at it for more than a decade.

I get up early, around 4:00 most mornings, and do my training in the family room while watching recordings of the late-night television shows from the evening before. I don't even think about "finding the time" because it is a very important part of my life.

Same with participating in social networks and creating online content - it becomes part of your life.

In my case, I do about 100 blog posts a year and maybe 30 videos. I comment on thousands of blogs. Most years I write a free ebook. And I'm on forums, chat rooms, Twitter, and Facebook.

Many people are surprised when I say that I probably spend about six hours a week on social media - about the same amount of time I spend exercising. I don't even think about it. It's important, so I do it. And I can't really say how I "fit it in". It's mainly in micro-bursts of one or five minutes throughout the day.

Seven More Reasons to Use Social Media

Social Media Phobias
Image by Intersection Consulting via Flickr

1 - You use social media to increase your outreach. Pick a few channels and stay focused to drive 'growth' metrics. Perhaps you are looking to find more people or raise awareness. List what you want to do and then measure that metric month over month.

2 - You use social media to let your consumer know more about your organization. That way if the consumer is in the market for a particular product or service you want to make sure that they are aware of what your organization has to offer.

3 - You use social media to know more about your consumer. You do this by listening to conversations, engaging the consumer in a dialogue, and constantly seeking feedback.

3 Ways To a Rational Social Media Program

Centralized Or Departmentalized Social Media Model

Most organizations default to this approach. Their organizational chart reads like a typical silo model. Control is maximized. It lessens surprises and allows for a consistent, branded message. With this model, social media usually falls into the marketing department. Marketing sees the social platforms as additional mediums to broadcast their messages.

Unfortunately, their rigid control of social media ignores its power. It does not recognize the human connections of its employees and their ability to influence others. It disregards employees as resources that can impact the growth of the organization. It discounts how employees can leverage their networks. It is not authentic and others quickly recognize the corporate-speak in most of its one-way posts.
Distributed Social Media Model

This model is the least controlled. And it is the most feared by organizational leadership. It is hard to contain. It may look like a chaotic mess as everyone in the company is allowed to chart their own course.

Tweet or not? Write a blog post or not? Post something in LinkedIn or not? It’s completely up to the employee.

The lack of top-down control actually gives social media its power. Employees may rise to the top as they leverage their social networks for the benefit of the company. The organization appears authentic and one that values human connections.

Zappos is a great example of a company that uses the distributed social media model. Companies that also fail to acknowledge social media or plan for its adoption may end up using this model.
Coordinated Social Media Model

The coordinated model is the most effective, simple and powerful. Straightforward social media guidelines are established. They serve as principles, not rules, regulations or laws.

Everyone is invited to use social media as long as they follow the guidelines. Control is shared and leadership trusts its employees to do the right thing.

This approach takes time and monitoring. Its effectiveness is in its horizontal networks.

Which of these three social media models resonates with you? Why do so many organizations fear social media and try to control it?

I've never really thought much about the difference between "blogging" and "article writing" for small business bloggers-- there would seem to be a lot of overlap. But Travis Olague makes a pretty good case for the distinction here.

It is self evident that by blogging and placing articles on your site's topics help you to promote the site by getting many deep links thus enlarging the audience of your readers.

This means neither more nor less than potential consumers and follow-up flourishing of your business. 100% confused by this sentence – re word please Both pieces of writing offer a great source of information and act as strong promotional devices, however which one is the best and the most efficient?
